The View from Abroad. France's Left Turn. Stu Haugen, former Chair RA France Former Chair of RA France Stu Haugen speaks to RARadio on the elections in France; the not so suave exit of M. Sarkozy and the entrance, after more than 27 years, of a socialist, M. Hollande to the Presidency of France. Mr. Haugen who has lived in France for many years and knows the political atmosphere in that country quite well, notes that the electorate was "throwing out the incumbent," and although the newsmedia outlets were claiming that the election of M. Hollande was a "rejection of the austerity" measures, Mr. Haugen explains that "nobody [was] cutting back, and that France was, and is, a "socialist" country, even under "Conservative governments." He points to M. Sarkozy's "abrasive character, his dismissal of public opinion, his distant demeanor, with no connection to the people," and compares him to our own "Emperor Obama.." For him, the electorate felt that "life was no good," and therefore,"threw [all] the bums out..." And in speaking of Socialist France, Mr. Haugen recalls Francoise Mitterrand, "how eventually he reversed track, shifting toward privatization..." And M. Sarkozy, "did not win the public's favor, with his glamorous wife and lifestyle;...the politics were right, but the style was wrong...he mismanaged his personal style..." As for M. Hollande, Mr. Haugen, affirms that he is a man "who has lived in the shadows of his party,..." an "unknown".... mp3
The View from Abroad. Parallels..Stu Haugen Stu Haugen comments on the dire economic outlook of France and the fact that "nobody was telling the truth." When asked what were the commentaries in the press and Media of the upcoming elections in the US and the candidates, Mr. Haugen explains that the French were "self focused" in the last few months, concentrating on the outcome of their own (political and economic) destiny...but insists that some parallels can be drawn between the countries,...and points to the many polls that distort the reality of the situation, and comments, that anyone who disagrees with the [President] is viewed/perceived/described as a racist..." For Mr.Haugen , Mr. Obama has been engaged in his "re-election campaign from day ONE," and agrees that Mr. Romney will be the "Business Doctor" that will have to repair the disasters of this Administration... mp3
Voting from Overseas.UOCAVA, Move Act. Capt. Samuel Wright (Ret.) Captain Sam Wright is know in "military circles for his efforts (began in 1976) to reform absentee voting laws and procedures for the benefit of military and overseas voters..." Captain Wright comments on how he took the issue of the "absentee voting " to heart when in 1976, then Rep. Ron Paul, for whom he was working, lost in the general election. The 300 or so, absentee ballots (needed) that were received on the day after the election, were not counted because of a technicality. He realized then, how people overseas could be disenfranchised: ballots, which had to be printed after primaries, could not/would not be mailed on time...To this day, the mailing of Absentee Ballots remains an issue, a cause for the "disenfranchisement" of overseas military and civilians. Capt. Wright speaks of UOCAVA, the bill passed in 1976 that guaranteed the right to vote for citizens living overseas in Federal elections, whether they were outside the country, temporarily or permanently. The Move Act, enacted in 2009, an Amendment to UOCAVA, is enforceable: States must have Absentee Ballots sent at least 45 days before election dates (primaries included) Capt. Wright points that the late mailing of ballots has been the "recurring" issue for at least 60 years, dating to the Congressional hearings on the subject during the Korean War.. It was after the 2000 election that absentee voting became relevant, again...remember the Chads? Capt. Wright explains the different offices within the States that are responsible for ensuring that overseas citizens receive their ballots. In Alaska, Maine, "DC", for example, Absentee Ballots are administered at State level; in the 48 remaining states, the absentee ballots are administered by counties, parishes, towns?... And, just Wisconsin, has circa 1800 local election offices...which have to ensure, by law, that Absentee ballots are sent 45 days prior to the election to citizens of that State and whether they are missionaries in Sudan, or military in Afghanistan... mp3
Voting Absentee. Requirements & Procedures. Capt. Sam Wright Capt. Wright explains the procedures for voting from overseas. Prior to 2009, one postcard application for registering to vote sufficed for 2 election cycles. Since the Move Act, registration to vote must be done on a yearly basis. And he encourages people to go to the FVAP.gov and follow the online wizard to complete the forms and notes that the absentee voter must fill in the address where he/she last resided town, county, State), even if the person no longer has a residence, and must include the address overseas. Capt. Wright reminds the absentee voter to pay attention to the requirements of completing a full ballot (for federal, state and local offices) and the ballot for federal offices only. If applying for a full ballo,t Capt. Wright recommends that the voter overseas receive legal advice from an American lawyer/official to make sure that they are in compliance with that State Tax laws' . In concluding the interview, Capt. Wright recommends voters to utilize the FVAP wizard and mentions what the Voting Action Officer at the State Department confirmed in a recent teleconference, that the US Consulates and American Embassies overseas will accept ballots from US Citizens in their premises, to be transported back to the US by the diplomatic pouch. To Vote from Overseas requires a simple procedure: 1) Request a ballot from your County Board of Elections in the State you last resided... 2) The election official sends to the voter the "unmarked ballot," 3) the Voter must mark the ballot and send it back to the local election official where he/she last resided...And, as to internet voting, Capt. Wright dismisses it as " not secure," a venue of opportunity, for hackers to change the markings ...( a change you can believe in)..transforming... the outcome of an election! mp3
