01 American Council for Young Political Leaders Part I - Marie Therésè Royce Guest: Marie Therésè Royce, MBA, Managing Director of a Fortune 500 company, Board Member of several organization including the Alliance Française in Washington, D.C., co-founder of Gender Strategy Communications speaks with RAR in her capacity as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, of ACYPL, "American Council for Young Political Leaders", a non-profit and bi-partisan organization based in Washington D.C., ( sponsored by the State Department) established in 1966 to promote and cultivate economic, cultural and political relationships among young political leaders. Mrs. Royce, (who, on a personal note, is married to Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA)) is an experienced political campaigner and has been involved in many grassroots efforts, (the latest,as Board Member in Republican candidate for Governor of California, Meg Whitman's campaign's "MegaWomen Statewide Leadership,") talks about the importance of Republicans Abroad as an organization that registers voters overseas... and her first involvement (as an alumnus) with the ACYPL organization.. As the website describes it,"each year ACYPL sends young Americans (age 25-40) on political study tours abroad and organizes reciprocal visits to the United States. Participants learn diplomatic skills, engage in dialogue on bilateral issues and forge professional relationships through the unique access they receive to the political leadership of the nation(s) they visit." 02 American Council for Young Political Leaders Part II - Marie Therésè Royce Guest:Marie Therésè Royce,MBA, in her capacity as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of ACYPL, "American Council for Young Political Leaders" discusses the exchange program. Since its inception, the program has attracted 6,000 participants,nominated by their State representatives, governors, ACPYL alumni, corporate contributors. Candidates are chosen for a 1-2 week intensive program..Mrs. Royce mentions that approximately 300 state members, 40 Congressmen, several Senators and Governors have paricipated as well as key leaders from China, Hungary, Japan... Mrs. Royce explains that these exchange programs are helpful, noting for example, the case of Rep. Dana Rohrbacher,(R-CA) who, as senior speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, attended the program in the USSR (at the time) and this unique experience "impacted the speeches" he then wrote...Most recently, Sen. Landrieu (D-LA) who participated in the program in 1982 in The Netherlands, forged relationships that became helpful in the wake of Katrina..receiving support from the Dutch in aid and knowhow (building dykes)... Mrs. Royce explains that the programs vary each year...and the destinations are different as well... Most recently, Africa, Brazil and China were the countries of choice for American participants. 03 Young Republicans in Action Part I - Rich Counts Rich Counts,Chairman of the District of Columbia Young Republicans (DCYRs). As Chairman, Rich serves as the organization's chief liaison between the DC Republican Committee (DCRC), the Young Republican National Federation (YRNF), the Republican National Committee (RNC), and other Republican organizations. Rich also serves as the Co-Chair of the YRNF's Young Republican Leadership Conference (YRLC).. Rich explains the mission of his organization for the young, 18-40-"grassroots support for conservative issues and Republican candidates, both locally and nationally; young people's involvement in the Republican party with events like the "I Give Republican Red" initiative which has saved hundreds of lives through collecting blood with the Red Cross, and our "Repubican Red is Just a Darker Shade of Pink" team in the Suzan G. Komen Race for the Cure fundraiser, which helps to raise money to cure breast cancer...; young Republicans' training to improve activism in politics..to give Young Republicans the support they need to become the difference makers of today not just of tomorrow...the Conservative Youth Movement is well-equipped to make a difference ..." 04 Young Republicans in Action Part II - Rich Counts Rich Counts, Chairman of the District of Columbia Young Republicans (DCYRs). Rich Counts comments on his organization's efforts to attract members (more than 1,000 subscribers to the DCYR newsletter) and how they do it: "word of mouth-is the best way" to induce the "like minded" to join; "new media communications, internet, facebook, Linked-in, youtube, Meetup.com..."
